GARLIC INFORMATION
-
A BRIEF GARLIC HISTORYGarlic is native to Central Asia and North Eastern Iran and has been used as a common seasoning across the globe for over a thousand years! It was used by the Ancient Egyptians as a seasoning, as well as a traditional medicine. Garlic is a close relative to the onion, shallot, leek and chive.
-
GARLIC STORAGEWe recommend storing your garlic in a cool, dark area of your house with ideal temperature between 55-65 degrees Fahrenheit. Depending on variety, the garlic at Deliereous Farms will store between 4-6 months (hardneck varieties) and 10-12 months (softneck varieties).
-
PLANTINGGarlic is typically a fall crop, planted from September - mid-November in the North...planted 2-4 weeks before the ground freezes and from November-January in the South. Garlic likes well drained soil, but will tolerate and adapt to many different kinds of soil.

GARLIC SCAPESWhat are scapes? The scape is the stem and flower of the hardneck variety of garlic. They are edible and can be used in any cuisine! We cut our scapes a few weeks prior to harvest to promote larger bulb growth. If the scape is left on the plant, it will form a flower and a seed (the flower and tiny seeds are also edible, and delicious!). Keep an eye out for Deliereous Farms scapes starting mid-June, they go fast!
